Why Patients Choose International Clinics for Spine Surgery

Patients often consider treatment abroad when they want to avoid open surgery with a long recovery period and are looking for a less traumatic solution. The key factor is technology. In specialised spine centres abroad, many spinal procedures are performed endoscopically through small incisions, using navigation systems and intraoperative control. This helps reduce tissue trauma and supports faster recovery.

Main Types of Spine Surgery Abroad

Endoscopic Discectomy for Herniated Disc

The surgeon removes the herniated disc fragment through a 7–8 mm cannula. There are no large incisions or stitches — only one small puncture. The patient can usually stand and walk on the same day. In selected cases, this method can provide significant pain relief with less tissue trauma than traditional open surgery.

Scoliosis Correction — Spinal Fusion

When spinal curvature exceeds 40 degrees, the vertebrae may be fixed with titanium screws to straighten the spine. In children who are still growing, expandable growing rods such as MAGEC may be used. These rods can be lengthened externally using a magnetic system, reducing the need for repeated lengthening surgeries.

Kyphosis and Fracture Correction

Severe spinal deformities can be corrected under intraoperative CT control. For osteoporotic compression fractures in older patients, kyphoplasty may be used: bone cement is injected into the collapsed vertebra through a small puncture, helping stabilise the bone and reduce pain.

Spinal Stenosis Treatment

Pressure on the nerve roots is relieved using minimally invasive techniques such as endoscopic foraminotomy through an incision of around 1.5 cm. The stability of the spine is preserved, and the muscles do not need to be widely dissected.

Removal of Spinal Tumours and Metastases

Spinal tumours are removed with the help of neuronavigation, which allows the surgeon to identify tumour borders with millimetre-level precision. For selected spinal metastases, radiosurgery such as CyberKnife may be used to destroy tumour tissue with radiation without open surgery.

Foetal Surgery for Spina Bifida

Severe spinal cord defects in the foetus can sometimes be treated before birth, usually between weeks 19 and 26 of pregnancy. In selected cases, this may improve the child’s future mobility potential. These procedures are performed by specialised paediatric and foetal surgery teams in Turkey and India.

Artificial Disc Replacement

An artificial disc prosthesis can be implanted in the cervical spine. Unlike spinal fusion, disc replacement preserves neck movement. This option may be suitable for active patients with selected disc conditions.

Best Countries for Spine Surgery

Turkey

Turkey offers convenient logistics and strong expertise in endoscopic spine surgery. Hospitals also have significant experience in surgical treatment of scoliosis in children and adolescents.

India

India offers lower surgical costs combined with high clinical experience. The country has advanced centres for foetal surgery, spinal tumour treatment, and complex spine procedures.

South Korea

South Korea is one of the leading destinations for spine surgery. Wooridul Spine Hospital specialises exclusively in spinal conditions and accepts highly complex cases.

Steps for Organising Treatment Abroad

  • Send us your available medical reports, test results, and MRI or CT scans. Our medical coordinator organises your case and arranges professional medical translation into English.

  • We contact spine surgeons at relevant hospitals. You receive official treatment programmes with detailed cost estimates. We review each option with you and help you make an informed decision.

  • You do not need to worry about the logistics. We coordinate hospital admission dates, assist with flights, arrange airport transfers, and organise comfortable accommodation.

  • From your first day at the hospital, you are supported by a dedicated medical interpreter. We coordinate communication with the hospital team and help ensure treatment follows the agreed care plan.

  • Our support continues after discharge. We assist with recovery planning, translate final medical reports, and help arrange remote follow-up consultations after you return home.
