Hospital Overview
American Hospital in Istanbul is one of Turkey’s most prestigious private medical institutions and a recognised leader in premium healthcare. With more than a century of history and the support of the Vehbi Koç Foundation, the hospital is committed to evidence-based medicine and personalised patient care. Its partnerships with leading US medical institutions and long-standing JCI accreditation make it a trusted destination for patients with complex medical conditions.
Founded in 1920, American Hospital is the oldest international hospital in Turkey. Today, the 60,500 m² medical campus is located in central Istanbul and operates under the management of the Vehbi Koç Foundation. More than $300 million has been invested in the hospital’s development and modernisation. Operating as a non-profit institution, the hospital focuses on evidence-based treatments and patient-centred care, ensuring that medical recommendations are guided solely by clinical need.
The hospital is recognised for excellence in oncology, cardiology, and highly complex surgical procedures. As an official partner of MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States, it provides patients with access to internationally recognised cancer treatment protocols. In cardiac surgery, specialists perform advanced minimally invasive and robot-assisted procedures. The hospital is also a leader in reproductive medicine, having introduced ICSI treatment in Turkey and continuing to offer advanced fertility care.
American Hospital is equipped with technologies comparable to those used in leading US medical centres. Across its 12 operating theatres, surgeons utilise the da Vinci Xi robotic platform and Brainlab navigation systems for highly precise neurosurgical procedures. The cancer centre is equipped with advanced TrueBeam STx radiosurgery technology, while PET-CT and 3-Tesla MRI systems support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. The hospital was also the first medical institution in Turkey to receive LEED Platinum certification, reflecting its commitment to safety, sustainability, and infection control.
More than 300 physicians across 38 medical specialties practice at American Hospital. Many have completed advanced training and fellowships in leading hospitals throughout the United States and the United Kingdom. As part of the Koç University healthcare ecosystem, physicians combine clinical practice with academic research and innovation. International patients benefit from a dedicated support team providing personalised assistance and interpreter services throughout every stage of treatment in Istanbul.
American Hospital has achieved a record six consecutive JCI accreditations, reflecting its long-term commitment to patient safety and quality standards. It was also the first hospital in Turkey to receive three ISO certifications simultaneously. Through its partnership with MD Anderson Cancer Center, patients have access to expert second opinions from internationally recognised oncology specialists. These achievements have established the hospital as one of Turkey’s leading destinations for international patients from more than 90 countries.
