What Is a Penile Implant?
Penile implant surgery, also called penile prosthesis surgery, places a device inside the penis to restore erectile function. It is used for severe erectile dysfunction when other treatments have failed, and in selected cases of significant penile deformity or anatomical damage.
Who Is a Candidate?
A penile implant may be considered for persistent erectile dysfunction when other treatments fail or are unsuitable. A urologist determines candidacy after reviewing the cause of ED, previous treatment, and possible contraindications.
When Is a Penile Implant Recommended?
Severe erectile dysfunction
No response to ED medications
ED after prostate surgery
Diabetes-related vascular ED
Peyronie’s disease with severe curvature
ED after trauma or surgery
Venous leak and persistent vascular ED
How the AMS 700 Penile Implant Works
The AMS 700 is a three-piece inflatable penile implant with cylinders, a pump, and a reservoir. Squeezing the pump moves fluid into the cylinders to create an erection. The system can then be deflated, and all components remain inside the body.

Cylinders
Placed inside the erectile chambers of the penis.

Pump
Placed in the scrotum and operated manually by the patient.

Reservoir
Stores the fluid and is placed in the pelvis or lower abdomen.
AMS 700 Penile Implant Models
The Boston Scientific AMS 700 line includes several models. The surgeon selects the model and size based on anatomy, tissue condition, and previous surgery.

Recovery After Penile Implant Surgery
First Days
Pain, swelling, and tenderness may occur after surgery. Prescribed medication and medical monitoring are provided.
First Weeks
Physical activity is limited. Follow wound-care instructions and monitor the surgical site.
Implant Activation
After healing, the doctor shows you how to inflate and deflate the implant.
Return to Sexual Activity
At around 6–8 weeks, patients usually begin using the implant and gradually return to sexual activity.
Penile Implant After Prostatectomy
After radical prostatectomy, erections may not recover despite pills, injections, or vacuum devices. A penile implant may be considered for persistent ED. The implant provides rigidity for intercourse but does not restore ejaculation lost after prostate surgery.
Penile Implant for Peyronie’s Disease
For Peyronie’s disease, a penile implant may be considered when significant curvature occurs with severe ED. The cylinders restore rigidity and may reduce the deformity. If curvature remains, the surgeon may perform additional correction. The approach is selected after examination.
Surgery Risks
Penile implant surgery carries risks including infection, bleeding, wound-healing problems, device migration, and mechanical failure. Revision, replacement, or removal may occasionally be required. Surgery is postponed with active infection, while diabetes, severe fibrosis, or previous surgery may require additional preparation.
