An anatomical model of the digestive system after gastric bypass surgery. During the procedure, a small stomach pouch is created and connected to the small intestine, bypassing most of the stomach and the first part of the intestine.

What Is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass, or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), is a weight loss surgery that creates a small stomach pouch and connects it to the small intestine. Patients feel full with smaller portions, while food bypasses most of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. This supports weight loss and can improve obesity-related metabolic conditions.

Who Is Gastric Bypass Suitable For?

Gastric bypass may be considered when obesity cannot be effectively managed through non-surgical treatment. It may also be recommended for patients with type 2 diabetes, severe acid reflux or other obesity-related conditions.

The surgeon considers BMI, age, eating habits, existing health conditions and previous weight-loss attempts. Previous bariatric surgery and the condition of the stomach are also taken into account.
