About Rezūm Therapy

Rezūm therapy is a modern non-surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, also known as enlarged prostate or BPH. The method uses the energy of water vapor to reduce enlarged prostate tissue without incisions, general anesthesia, or a long hospital stay.

The procedure is FDA approved and is included in the clinical guidelines of the American Urological Association.

How Rezūm Works

A thin device with a small needle is inserted through the urethra. Sterile water vapor is delivered into the enlarged prostate tissue for 9 seconds. The vapor controlledly destroys the excess hyperplastic cells. Over the following 4–6 weeks, the body gradually removes the treated cells. The prostate decreases in volume, pressure on the urethra is reduced, and urinary symptoms improve.

A thin probe with a needle is inserted through the urethra. Sterile steam is injected into the enlarged prostate tissue for 9 seconds. This controlled destruction of hyperplastic cells occurs. Over the next 4-6 weeks, the body eliminates the damaged cells, the prostate shrinks, pressure on the urethra decreases, and urinary symptoms improve.

Who Is Rezūm Therapy Suitable For?

Rezūm is considered for patients when medication is ineffective or undesirable as a long-term solution. The main requirement is a prostate volume of approximately 30 to 80 ml.

Moderate or severe urinary symptoms, usually IPSS 13 or higher

Frequent urination, weak urinary stream, and nighttime urination

Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying

Medication does not provide sufficient relief

The patient does not want traditional prostate surgery

Preservation of sexual function is important for the patient

How the Procedure Is Performed

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or light sedation, without general anesthesia. A device is inserted through the urethra, and water vapor is delivered for 9 seconds into the targeted areas of the enlarged prostate.

On average, the procedure takes 20–30 minutes. After the procedure, a urinary catheter is placed for 3–5 days. The patient remains under observation in the hospital for 1–2 nights.

Recovery After Rezūm Therapy

Day 1

Moderate discomfort in the urethral area is considered normal. Symptoms are controlled with pain medication. A urinary catheter is placed and usually remains for 3–5 days.

Days 2–4

Before discharge, the urologist performs a follow-up examination. The patient receives a discharge summary and medical recommendations in Russian, including catheter care instructions. Return flight is usually possible on day 3–4.

Weeks 2–4

After catheter removal, frequent urination and mild discomfort may occur. This is a normal inflammatory response of the treated tissue. Regular daily physical activity is allowed. Sexual activity can usually be resumed from the third or fourth week.

Months 1–3

During this period, the body completes the removal of treated cells, the prostate decreases in volume, and urinary symptoms gradually improve. The full effect of the procedure is usually assessed after 3 months.
